What is a niche?

  1. Neil Patel of Quicksprout blogs about digital marketing.
  2. Ecoki is all about living the eco-friendly lifestyle.

What does finding your niche mean?

Having a niche can give you quick rewards in terms of recognition. Your readers know what you will blog about. This will help you get more traffic to your website faster than if you were to blog about, say, pregnancy and freelance writing in one blog. Not that it shouldn’t be done. But with a niche, you can quickly get your hands on a focused (and loyal) audience. You will be recognized as an expert, and financial success will ensue.

So what can you do to find your niche?

The first thing you need to do is to sit down and make a list of all the topics you are likely to blog about. Look at this list, keep it handy and follow the tips listed here:

1. Reflect on Your Competency.

From the list you created, which is the topic are you most competent to write about? You could be an accomplished stylist in your day job, but are you competent enough to blog about finances? OK, so you're masters in finance and your passion for numbers can help you blog about a finance niche. So, you get the drift?

2. Measure Your Passion.

The only way a fashion stylist would blog about forex trading is if he or she is passionate about the finance niche. Without that passion running through your veins, you may eventually just run out of ideas, motivation and shut down your blog. That would be a terrible waste of your time and resources.

3. Know Your Audience.

If you want your blog to be successful, then it is very important to know your audience. Knowing your audience will help you write the right content and increase conversions. You can use free tools such as Google Analytics to find out demographics for the chosen niche.

4. Do you have solutions to their problems?

Which one of the niches in your list do you have the most expertise in? Blogging is not just about recording your life events or rambling mindlessly of your own opinions. Readers go online to find a solution to their problem. See where which topic is the best for you to cover with solutions.

5. Write for That Ideal Person.

From the many niches, you may have listed, to find your niche, reflect for a moment about the person you will write to. Knowing your audience is one thing, but you cannot write for the masses. Writing for an ideal person will help your posts be more focused and engaging.

6. Does this Inspire Others?

For the niche you have in mind, can you take a moment to think whether you writing about will inspire readers? This is important, considering the potential competition you may face. You content needs to stand out and so, writing inspiring content can help you do exactly that.

7. Prune Your Focus.

With the help of the above tips, you may have narrowed down your list by now. If you have, then it’s time to prune it further. For example, if a food blog is what you have in mind, then you can prune it further to blog about say, just vegan food or just vegan desserts - now those are niches in the broad category of food.

8. Can you Make Money from your Chosen Niche?

Some bloggers kickstart their website because they are so passionate about the area of expertise. Others start with the sole intention of making money. Either way, if you want to monetize your blog reflect if you can find products that suit your chosen niche. For example, if you want to blog about photography then selling expensive photography equipment from amazon is a great way to monetize your blog.

9. Check out your competition in that niche.

You can use tools such as SEMRush to check out the kind of posts your competitors' posts. You can also see their ranking. Take a look at their content. The only way to find success on your blog is to write better than your competitors. If you can do that then that’s your niche.

10. Choose a crowded niche.

Experts would say to choose a small niche to be successful. But you can be successful with a crowded niche as well. All you need to do is build better content. You can choose to write about digital marketing or set up a fashion blog like a million other bloggers. But if you can build better content then you can go with a crowded niche too!

If you find a niche that you are both passionate and knowledgeable about, building content for it will be a breeze. There are successful bloggers who started off wonky, were unsure, but eventually found their niche and built their brand. So don’t worry if you don’t find yours right away. Take the plunge and see where the wonderful world of blogging takes you!
